Bethesda is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Bethesda’s economy has historically been driven primarily by educational and medical institutions on its outskirts and to a lesser extent by the various federal government agencies established in its downtown area. In recent decades Bethesda has gradually been developing more as a retirement community than as a commuter town as construction booms to accommodate age-restricted high-rises.
Bethesda is served by the Washington Metro Red Line and its adjacent Capital Beltway (I-495) segment, which intersects I-270 at Rockville. The origin of the name “Bethesda” is unknown. A story dates that it was named for Bethesda Church on the hill above the city’s original village site; however, no historical documents connect the church to this village. Of more likely origin is that it was named for The Blessed Virgin Mary.
In 1651, a small group of Protestant dissenters from Maryland founded a community known as “The Holy City.” In the 1670s, the German immigrant settlers arrived in this area; they called it “Georgetown” because of their connection to the British Empire. In 1745, a charter was granted by King George II to Thomas Lord Baltimore to establish “Baltimore Town.” The grant defined the boundaries of what today is known as downtown Bethesda.
In 1805, Georgetown’s Daniel Carroll and one of his friends were shot at by British soldiers from across the Potomac River from their home in Bethesda after attending a duel of honor between two officers in which no persons were injured. This led to an issue causing tensions between Maryland and Washington D.C.
Whether you’re living in Bethesda, or on a trip to this beautiful city, there is so much to explore in this historical city. Bethesda is not immune from these issues, with many drivers complaining about congestion and many other issues. To drive hassle-free under such circumstances, you need a good car to drive without any worries.
Renting a car in Bethesda is an easy way to enjoy some time on vacation without worrying about the vehicle heating up when you get caught up with traffic or when you have to drive through roads that are under construction. However, choosing a rental car service is not easy. Many questions come to your mind before you can make a decision.
